CJP Explainer: What Is the Cockroach Janata Party and What Does It Actually Stand For?

The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) is a satirical online political movement that emerged in mid-May 2026. Here is what you need to know.

Who Founded It?

The CJP was founded by Abhijeet Dipke, a 30-year-old Indian currently pursuing public relations at Boston University in the United States. He launched the party as an impulsive response to remarks made by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant during a Supreme Court hearing on May 15, 2026.

What Was the Trigger?

During a court hearing, CJI Surya Kant reportedly referred to unemployed youth entering law, journalism, and activism as ‘cockroaches’ and ‘parasites.’ The CJI later clarified he had been misquoted and was specifically referring to those who entered professions using bogus degrees. The controversy had already gone viral before the clarification, and Dipke used it to launch the CJP.

Is It a Real Political Party?

No. The CJP is not registered with the Election Commission of India and does not contest elections. It describes itself as ‘a non-registered party under the Representation of Cockroaches Act at No Election Commission of Cockroachistan.’ It is a satirical platform.

What Are Its Key Demands?

Despite its satirical framing, the CJP has published a detailed manifesto. Its key positions include: no Rajya Sabha seat for retired Chief Justices; arrest of the Chief Election Commissioner under UAPA if legitimate votes are deleted; 50% reservation for women in Parliament and Cabinet; cancellation of licences for large corporate-owned media; and a 20-year ban from public office for legislators who switch parties.

Could It Become a Real Party?

Dipke has not ruled it out but has not committed to it either. He says the next step is engaging with the CJP’s membership to understand what they want. He has firmly rejected comparisons to Bangladesh’s 2024 student-led uprising, arguing that Indian Gen Z will express its dissent through ‘peaceful and democratic means,’ not street protest.
